3 Ways Cholesterol Can Impact Your Oral Health

3 Ways Cholesterol Can Impact Your Oral HealthYour oral health can be affected by many things in your body. For instance, if you have a chronic auto-immune disease, your body may not be able to fight off bacteria and infections efficiently. This could affect your mouth, teeth, and gums if you are unable to fight the bacteria housed in your mouth. Cavities could form as a result. Similarly, if you have high cholesterol, it can affect your oral health as well.

Cholesterol And Your Oral Health

Cholesterol is a lipid. Cholesterol travels through your bloodstream. If your blood contains too much cholesterol, you could be at risk for a heart attack or stroke. Sadly, there are usually no symptoms for high cholesterol. Make sure to get your cholesterol levels checked every four to six years by your medical practitioner.

Cholesterol can impact your oral health. If you take medication for cholesterol, called statins, you may be putting your oral health at risk. Statins may make it difficult for you to have a root canal as they can affect the calcification of the inside of your tooth.

Cholesterol can also lead to heart disease. This may cause additional problems for your oral health. The bacteria levels in your mouth can make their way to your heart, causing serious illness.

Lastly, cholesterol medicine may dry out your mouth. If you do not have a good saliva flow, you may be more susceptible to tooth decay. Saliva rinses your mouth of food debris and plaque. Having a reduced amount of saliva in your mouth means that you will have to be conscious of brushing and rinsing your teeth more often.
