How To Prepare Tooth for Extraction

Posted on 6/19/2023 by Ranches Family Dental
How To Prepare Tooth for ExtractionGetting a tooth extracted can be a nerve-wracking experience. However, with the right preparations, you can rest assured of a smooth, pain-free tooth extraction process. Here are a few measures to take to smoothen your tooth extraction process.

Avoid Hot Foods and Drinks

To ensure that your teeth are as healthy as possible before an extraction, you should avoid hot foods and drinks for at least 24 hours prior to the procedure. Hot foods can cause damage to your gums, which may result in bleeding during or after your extraction. Additionally, drinking hot liquids can increase swelling of the tissue surrounding a tooth that has been pulled out.

Eat Soft Foods

Eat soft foods for at least 24 hours before your extraction. Choose foods that are easy to chew and swallow, such as soups, mashed potatoes, yogurt, or custard desserts. As well as drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist during the procedure.

Stop Smoking

Avoid smoking for at least 24 hours before the procedure. Smoking can slow the healing process and increase your risk of infection. Your dentist may also recommend other steps to help reduce this risk, such as using an antibiotic rinse or mouthwash after each meal or snack (if you have been prescribed one). If quitting cold turkey isn't working for you, ask your dentist if they have any tips on breaking the habit.

Take Medications

Take any medications prescribed by your dentist before your extraction. You will want to make sure to take the full course of antibiotics if prescribed. Also, avoid taking over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil) that may interfere with your procedure.

Have a Plan for Aftercare

Ensure you have someone to stay with you for at least 24 hours after your procedure, so they can help monitor any swelling or bleeding. If the dentist recommends it, have ice packs and gauze ready for after your extraction.

Be Prepared for Discomfort

After your extraction, you will likely experience some discomfort, but this is normal. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication to help control it. If you have any questions about what to expect or how to manage any discomfort, ask your dentist for advice.
