What Should I Not Eat After a Crown?

Posted on 10/15/2023 by Ranches Family Dental
a plate of food in Eagle Mountain, UTWhen you discover chipped or discolored teeth, you can opt for cosmetic solutions to hide such defects. One standard solution is the placement of crowns. These dental tools are helpful, but you must care for them to ensure they retain their beauty and longevity. You must also be mindful of your foods to avoid damaging your crowns or causing discomfort. Some of the foods you should refrain from include:

Sticky and Chewy Foods

Sticky and chewy foods can get stuck in the crowns and dislodge or damage your crowns. These foods include things such as taffy, candies, or gum. After placing crowns, your dentist will advise you to maintain the integrity of your crowns by eating such foods.

Hard Foods

Hard foods place excessive pressure on your crowns. These foods can make your crowns break or chip. Ensure you avoid things such as nuts or hard candies.

Tough Meats

Some meats are hard to chew and can strain your crowns excessively. If you must eat meat, settle for tender meat that does not damage your dental tools. Meat with bones or cuts of steak can dislodge your crowns and cause damage.

Acidic and Sugary Foods

Highly acidic or sugary foods not only damage your natural teeth but also have the potential to erode dental crown material and leave behind cracks. These foods weaken the cement that firmly holds your dental tools in position. They also increase the risk of decay of teeth around the teeth. If you must consume these foods, ensure that you brush your teeth afterward.

Popcorn and Nuts

Biting on popcorn or nuts can cause some danger to your dental crowns. These foods can break, crack, or make your crown dislodge. You need to be cautious when eating such foods or opt for alternatives that are friendly to your dental work.
