Now that you have been outfitted with dentures, you are ready to try them out on the world. While you are contemplating your next night out at your favorite restaurant, it is important you know how to care for your dentures at home. Here is a guide for caring for your dentures at home.
What Are Dentures?
Dentures are prosthetic teeth that can replace your natural teeth. You may have dentures for only your top teeth, your bottom teeth, or all of your teeth. Dentures usually have prosthetic teeth made of porcelain attached to an acrylic base. Some people prefer dentures that are made only of acrylic because they are stronger and lighter than dentures made of a combination of porcelain and acrylic.
How To Care for Your Dentures
One of the most important things you need to remember now that you have dentures is that you still need to clean your mouth and care for your gums as you are caring for your new teeth. You may want to use mouthwash for gum health, for example. You can also use a very soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your gums, tongue, and the insides of your cheek to keep them healthy.
After eating, remove and rinse your dentures so that food particles do not remain on them. If you are concerned about bad breath, rinsing your dentures off after eating will help control it.
You will want to brush your dentures at least once a day to clean off food particles and denture adhesive if you use that to make sure your dentures adhere to your gums. You also need to soak your dentures overnight to keep them clean and fresh. Do not wear your dentures to sleep.
Do not use bleach or peroxide to clean your dentures. These materials actually weaken dentures, which break more easily.
Most importantly, you need to make sure you are still coming to our dentist for checkups. Your gums and mouth structures still need to be checked, and your dentures need to be checked for fit. Not sure when the last time you visited our dentist was? Give us a call to make an appointment.
