Why Might You Need a Gum Biopsy?

Posted on 10/30/2019 by Ranches Family Dental
Why Might You Need a Gum Biopsy? When you have something foreign in your mouth or throat our staff will recommend a biopsy of it. A biopsy is the removal of foreign tissue from the body to be examined closely.

Our dentist will recommend one on anything that isn't normal during an oral examination. If you feel or see anything abnormal contact our office immediately.

The Early Signs of Oral Cancer

In the early stages, there are often no signs or symptoms, but users of tobacco or alcohol products need checkups regularly. Signs to look for are patches near the mouth area that are red or white. Ulcers or sores that last longer than 7-10 days. Any lumps, sore throat, or feeling like something is stuck in your throat. These are just a few of the signs to be aware of.

Testing For Cancerous Cells

A biopsy is the only concrete way to identify cancer. The most common is an Incisional Biopsy. Our dentist will remove a small piece of the suspicious tissue to be examined under a microscope. Excisional Biopsy means removing all suspicious material. After the biopsy is tested, if the results show it's benign, it means it is non-cancerous and non-spreading. If diagnosed pre-malignant or malignant. It is cancerous and can spread to other areas. If diagnosed early enough it can be cured.

Research in the UK on oral cavity cancer found almost 80 out of 100 people survive their cancer for 1 year after being diagnosed. Almost 60 out of 100 people survive their cancer for over 5 years after being diagnosed. If caught early, a complete cure is possible in 90% of cases with surgery alone.

There are advanced surgeries, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy that have shown high cure rates. An early biopsy by our staff can save your life. Call and schedule an appointment today if you possess any of the early signs listed above.
