Why You Need Dental Debridement

Posted on 11/30/2019 by Ranches Family Dental
Why You Need Dental DebridementBacteria that naturally occur in the mouth must be cleaned every day. In fact, we recommend flossing and brushing at least two times a day to clean up the bacteria as well as visiting for a regular dental cleaning once every six months.

When bacteria are left in the mouth for extended periods of time, it can eventually turn into plaque. Plaque is the enemy of a healthy mouth because it can lead to problems like gum disease and tooth decay.

With the regular care mentioned above, plaque has a hard time forming, but without it, the plaque can become a real nuisance. During regular teeth cleaning, we are able to remove plaque that is newly formed, but for harder to remove plaque that has been in place for a while it is necessary to perform a dental debridement.

What Is a Dental Debridement?

A dental debridement is a step above a normal teeth cleaning. When dental debridement is implemented, the goal is to remove all of the hard plaque that may be covering the teeth which cannot be removed by routine teeth cleanings. Typically, most people do not require dental debridement, but it is an option for people who have neglected their teeth. Fortunately, a debridement is noninvasive and only requires a little more time than a normal teeth cleaning.

The process of a debridement is simple in that alongside scaling tools used for teeth cleaning more abrasive tools will be needed. Besides this one aspect, a dental debridement is no different than your typical visit. During a dental debridement, it may be necessary to clean areas not covered in normal teeth cleanings which is why it may make for a longer visit as well.

It is important to follow our advice when it comes to oral health. We often suggest a dental debridement when we are no longer able to inspect your teeth for underlying problems. By cleaning your teeth thoroughly, we are able to more easily see the surface of your teeth and evaluate the state of your teeth. We are always happy to answer any other questions you have regarding dental debridement or any other oral health question, so feel free to drop in or give us a call.
