Your night guard is important to your oral care so, it is important to get into a routine of care and cleaning and follow that routine daily and your night guard and oral appliances will last you a very long time. It is highly suggested that you brush your teeth before you even put in your night guard or oral appliance before bed each night that way you will avoid trapping any food that might cause bacteria to grow while you are asleep and also you will ensure the most proper fit. Brush your teeth thoroughly and then simply give your night guard or appliance a quick rinse under the sink to clean any residue it might have collected inside the case while being stored and place it in your mouth. General Care and Cleaning of Your Night Guard and Other Oral AppliancesEach morning when you wake and remove the night guard at the very least you should rinse it with water and shake it dry before you place it back in its case to air dry. If you get busy and forget the routine a time or two it will be okay. However, try to get back on track as soon as possible as this will only enhance the proper oral hygiene for your teeth and overall optimum health for your teeth. At least several times a week rinse the guard in water after each use, use a cleaner to remove bacteria or plaque that can cause tooth decay or bad breath – a good suggestion is hydrogen peroxide as it is available and most grocery stores and pharmacies and is very inexpensive and can be used for a variety of other reasons as well. Simply put the mouth guard in a cup or glass and fill with enough Hydrogen Peroxide to completely cover it, let the night guard soak for at least a few minutes, then remove and rinse with water. Rinse thoroughly with water and let soak for a few minutes. After you feel the guard is clean, shake or pat dry with a towel or washcloth and then just simply place the guard back into its case by your bed or in your medicine cabinet. Feel free to call our office at any time if you are having trouble with any aspect of your night guard or any of your oral appliances. |
