Who Tends to Get the Most Cavities?

Who Tends to Get the Most Cavities? One of the biggest reasons patients who do not make annual or semi-annual checkups show up on our door is cavities. Like going to see the doctor, many people figure, why go if I'm not ill. Many people feel the same way about the dentist. But, as with your medical doctor, we can detect problems like cavities, before you can see them or feel them.

When we detect cavities early, the treatment is less expensive, less invasive and potentially less painful. Our x-rays can spot a tiny hole even we can't see with the naked eye. But with the x-ray, we can take care of it before it becomes a huge hole. The other advantage of early detection is that we can help you determine what contributed to the formation of the cavity. It is true, some people get more cavities than others.

What Contributes to Getting Cavities?

The first cause of cavities is a poor oral health regime. It is imperative that you brush your teeth and do so properly. If you want tips or a demonstration of the proper way to brush your teeth, we are here to help. We recommend, based on the American Dental Association standards, that you brush your teeth twice a day and floss once.

Several things contribute to getting cavities. One important one is saliva. Saliva cleans your teeth and leaves a protective coating on them. This coating has properties that help protect your teeth by maintaining the correct pH balance. If you smoke or take medications that dry out your mouth, drink more water to make up for it. But drink water that is fluoridated. Bottled water may be more healthy in some respects, but most municipal water is fluoridated and thus better for your teeth.

Another way to prevent cavities is sugar consumption. Yes, we all know you shouldn't eat sugar, but what you may not know is that the quantity isn't the issue, it's when you eat the sugar that is. If you want to eat sugar, it's fine, but try to eat it in large chunks rather than small amounts throughout the day so you can give your teeth a break. If you have any questions, give our office a call.
