Does Gum Help with Keeping the Health of Your Mouth Optimal?

Does Gum Help with Keeping the Health of Your Mouth Optimal?Sometimes it is really hard to tell what is actually good or acceptable for you and what is bad for you, health-wise that is. One week a group of medical experts condemns a food or beverage, the next week, another group praises its health benefits in moderation. With that back and forth research also comes the stigmas and rumors about numerous products and the effects they have on our wellness. When it comes to our oral health, specifically, gum chewing is something that has always been debated, but here are a couple of facts:

Sugar-Free is the Key

The first thing that needs to be understood is that for chewing gum to be an acceptable or even beneficial practice it has to be sugar-free. Any sugar or fructose infused product can contribute to tooth damage. There are also numerous organic and healthier options than what's in the grocery store checkout aisle. And these can add even more benefits. At minimum, you can expect an increased saliva flow, as well as a mild cleaning/scrubbing for the teeth, especially down near the gum line.

Best Time to Chew

Our suggestion is shortly after having a meal or a snack. The longer the time that plaque has to settle and deposit after food is left on the teeth, the harder it becomes to remove. Popping a piece after lunch or dinner can give you a quick clean up on some of those leftover particles prior to your before-bed brush and floss.

Chewing gum is like many other things concerning your overall wellness, if you do it correctly and in moderation, it usually offers a few reasonable health benefits. But of course, none of this is in place of regular visits to our office. Please feel to come visit us for any of your dental needs.
