Have You Ever Heard of Bite Disease?
Posted on 10/5/2020 by Ranches Family Dental
Have You Ever Heard of Bite Disease?Your dentist knows that bite or occlusal disease is a degenerative process resulting from a type of mandible bite in which the teeth are not aligned correctly. Unkind forces are placed on the teeth every time they come together, creating an uncomfortable and unhealthy condition. When teeth are misaligned, the forces of the mandible are too much for the teeth often causing them to splinter and crack. When bite anomalies occur, a disproportionate effect can exist in patients, causing problems with the teeth and surrounding muscles and even the jaw joint. Furthermore, there might exist a combination of all three. This is the most commonly reported dental disorder and simultaneously the most undiagnosed dental disorder.

What Happens If Untreated?

When the occlusal disease is left untreated, there is a high probability that the patient will become increasingly ill over a short period. This is truly a bad situation as teeth can be lost and uneven wear on the teeth will most assuredly occur. Also, muscle and jaw issues will most likely intensify and cause even more discomfort while the convolution and costs of any treatment will increase.

What Treatments Are Available?

The dental community is aware of available treatments, but the disease must be recognized early for any degree of success to occur. If diagnosed in the early stages, the advancement of the condition may be avoided, making treatment much easier and potentially more effective. When treatment begins in later stages, the damage to teeth, muscles, and jaw can become more severe and subsequently more costly. Treatment can consist of a mild reshaping of the teeth in order to stabilize the bite, the rebuilding of worn teeth, orthodontic treatment to better align the teeth, or a combination of all three. Prevention includes a thorough examination and analysis.

We believe that when found early, the patient can have a normal and healthy-looking smile and a happier life. If you need more information on this or any other treatments, contact our office today. We are here to help!
