Regular visits to the dentist help identify tooth decay, also known as dental cavities or caries. Tooth decay has troubling symptoms, and the earlier you seek care for it, the better it is since it will prevent you from requiring extensive treatment in the future. Dr. Richard Baldwin at Ranches Family Dental suggests the following treatments to his patients with dental caries:
Fillings
The principal treatment option for when tooth decay is in its earliest stages is a filling. Fillings are produced using several different materials, such as tooth-colored composite resins, porcelain, or a dental blend that is a mixture of numerous materials.
Root Canals
If your caries has reached the inner pulp of your tooth, you might need a root canal treatment. This treatment is done to save a badly damaged tooth or extract a severely infected tooth. First, we remove the tooth pulp in the damaged tooth and then inject medication into the root canal to clear any infection. Then, we replace the pulp with a filling.
Flouride Treatments
If your cavity has just started to grow, you might want to opt for a fluoride treatment. This treatment can sometimes reverse cavities by restoring the tooth enamel. Fluoride treatments contain more fluoride than the amount found in toothpaste, mouthwashes, and tap water. These treatments are mostly in the form of liquid, foam, varnish, or gel brushed onto the teeth or placed in a small, quaintly shaped tray that fits over the teeth.
Tooth Extractions
If your teeth have become severely damaged and can't be restored, the only option is to remove them. Getting your tooth extracted can leave a gap. To prevent your other teeth from shifting, you should consider getting a dental implant or a bridge to replace the extracted tooth.
