How Long Does It Take to Get Used to a New Filling?
Posted on 5/24/2021 by Ranches Family Dental
A dental filling is one of the most common procedures that one can get. The main aim of this procedure is to fix damages done by tooth decay. It is a short and painless procedure that will help your tooth function normally for a long time. Before the procedure, our professionals will take you through what you should expect, the materials we use, how long it will take the filing to set and heal. Because the procedure involves using a drill, we will have to use a local anesthetic to numb your tooth area.
How Long Does the Procedure Takes?
Generally, a simple filling can take 20 minutes, and multiple or larger fillings can take longer. The time the procedure takes also depends on the materials used. Replacing older filings may take slightly longer because we will have to drill out the old filings first before inserting the new filling material.
How Long Do Fillings Take to Set?
Depending on the type of material we will use, the filing can take between 1 and 24 hours to set. Some filings, such as ceramic filing, can set immediately. Before your filings are set, it may be best to avoid eating hard foods. Our professionals will advise you on what you should do and eat as you wait for them to set.
How Long DO They Take to Heal?
Though most filings heal quickly, you are likely to experience some sensitivity after the anesthetic wears off. It will take you at least 2 to three days to get used to your new fillings. However, if you used gold, metal, or amalgam, you would need up to a week to heal and get used to them. If your bite still feels off after a week or you feel some pain, you may have to get the filings adjusted to help you get used to them faster. Call us for more information.
