What Causes Yellow Teeth?

Posted on 5/10/2021 by Ranches Family Dental
What Causes Yellow Teeth?Having yellow teeth can kill your confidence. While this isn't as serious a problem as tooth decay or cavities, it can wreak havoc on your self-esteem. Yellow teeth can be a part of your genetics or just a byproduct of aging. If not, they can often be attributed to the following causes.

Smoking

Smoking is currently the leading cause of teeth discoloration. As nicotine builds up, teeth become yellow and stained. Most, if not all, tobacco products result in this, including chewing tobacco, cigarettes, and pipe smoke. No matter the product, the end result is the same – darker and more yellow teeth over time.

Diet

Many people are surprised to learn that eating habits affect teeth color. Pigmented food like tomato sauce and berries may seem like obvious culprits, but seemingly innocuous items like apples and balsamic vinegar dressing contribute to this too! When it comes to beverages, in addition to coffee and tea, wine and sodas can also stain your teeth.

Fluoride

Long-term exposure to fluoride is another reason for tooth discoloration. This overexposure is called Fluorosis and is caused by drinking too much fluoridated water and drinks at a young age.

Medication

Medication can also result in discoloration, both, in adults and children. Antibiotics such as doxycycline and tetracycline can result in darker teeth in children. Adults are not spared from this. Plenty of medicines can cause yellowing teeth in adults, including antipsychotics, anti-allergy medication, and even medication for blood pressure.

Poor Dental Hygiene

If you don't practice good oral hygiene, you're not effectively removing plaque and may be furthering tooth decay. Plaque and tartar buildup can cause discoloration, turning your teeth into an unflattering yellow color.

However, you're not destined to have yellow teeth forever – Dr. Richard Baldwin and Dr. Baldwin at Ranches Family Dental offer teeth whitening services and can help your teeth shine like they used to. Simply call (385) 374-0500 to make an appointment.
