Dangers of Not Brushing Long Enough Each Time

Dangers of Not Brushing Long Enough Each TimeDid you know you need to brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time you brush? This is the ideal amount of time to remove a good amount of plaque from your teeth and to reach every surface. If you do not brush for two minutes, you are opening yourself up to a number of oral health issues. Here are a few of the dangers you may face if you do not brush for two minutes each time.

You Leave Plaque on Your Teeth

The biggest issue with not brushing for two minutes is that you will not fully clean your teeth. Two minutes really is not that much time, especially when you need to brush the fronts, backs, and crowns of all of your teeth. You may end up leaving plaque on parts of your teeth that were not fully cleaned. This plaque will slowly damage your teeth' enamel, especially if you do not fully brush twice a day. The results of this could include an increase in cavities, the development of gum disease, and even eventual tooth loss.

You Do Not Have Time to Clean the Other Surfaces in Your Mouth

While brushing your teeth is obviously important, you also need to clean the other parts of your mouth too. If you do not brush for two minutes, you may not have time to do this. First, you need to clean the gums by brushing along the line where your teeth and gums meet. This helps reduce the risk of developing gingivitis.

Second, you also need to be sure to brush your tongue. Many people do not realize they need to do this. However, many bacteria can settle on the large surface of the tongue. These bacteria can later get onto your teeth, causing cavities. Even if they remain on the tongue, they can still cause bad breath. Brushing your tongue each time helps reduce the risk of halitosis.

Even if you do brush for two minutes each time, you still may not get everything. That is why we highly recommend you come to see us every six months. A professional cleaning will remove any plaque you may have missed.
