Why We Recommend You Always Brush the Full Two Minutes

Why We Recommend You Always Brush the Full Two MinutesYou likely know that you should brush your teeth at least two times a day, but do you know that you need to brush for at least two minutes? If you do not spend this amount of time cleaning your teeth, you are likely missing some areas. That means while you may get a good amount of bacteria, debris, and plaque off your teeth, you are not getting all of it.

What Studies Have Shown

A number of studies done by the American Dental Association and a number of experts in dentistry have discovered that brushing for two minutes truly is key to good oral health. For example, one study revealed that if you brush for one minute, you will remove less than a third of the plaque on your teeth. If you brush for two minutes, you will remove almost half. While that may not seem like a lot, it is very significant in protecting your oral health.

The plaque your toothbrush cannot remove is why you come to see us every six months. A professional cleaning removes the rest of this plaque and helps protect your teeth from the damage it causes.

Most People Do Not Brush Every Surface

One reason why many people do not take the full two minutes to brush is that they are not brushing everything. They likely only brush the fronts and the tops or bottoms of their teeth. They do not brush the back of the teeth, their tongue, or the gum line. Even if you are brushing all of these spots, you may not be completely cleaning them.

If you find that you are not brushing your teeth for the full two minutes, you can do a few things. You can set a simple timer on your phone for two minutes, or you can play a song that you know is at least two minutes long. No matter what you do, spending two minutes in the morning and two at night is a worthwhile investment in your oral health.
