Can You Get Dentures If Your Jaw Bone Has Receded?
Posted on 9/6/2021 by Ranches Family Dental
If your jaw bone has receded and you want to get fixed dentures, you will need to set up a time to get bone grafts. That is the best way to ensure your implants for fixed dentures stay in place.
Getting Removable Dentures
If your goal is to get fixed dentures, or All-on-4 implants that allow you to wear fixed dentures, it is best, at first, to get removable dentures if you have a problem with jaw bone recession. To ensure you can eventually wear fixed dentures, we will need to schedule an appointment for you to rebuild the bone. This can only be done by getting a bone graft.
How Does a Bone Graft Work?
While one of several bone grafts may be performed, they are all based on the same basic therapy. We will make an incision in the jaw before attaching or grafting bone material to build up the receded bone. A dental bone graft is recommended for anyone who has lost one or more adult teeth or has gingivitis (gum disease) or periodontitis (advanced gum disease).
Where Is the Bone Graft Material Extracted?
We graft bone, usually from the hip, back of the jaw, or the tibia. When we perform this type of therapy, it is called an autograph.
Types of Dental Bone Grafts
You can get a bone graft in one of 5 ways. An autograft, as noted, involves getting the bone for grafting from the patient's body. An allograft uses bone from another person, typically a cadaver. Xenografts involve removing bone from other species, such as coral, pig, or cow. Alloplasts use synthetic materials, such as calcium phosphate or calcium sodium phosphosilicate, to build up the jaw bone.
Waiting to Get Fixed Dentures
If you want to get implants, like the All-on-4 implant surgery for fixed dentures, you need to build up any receded bone to ensure placement success. In the interim, wearing removable dentures can provide a solution while you get the required grafting surgery.
