Fluorosis in Children

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Ranches Family Dental
Fluorosis in ChildrenFluorosis can be caused by any amount of fluoride. Too much fluoride can cause fluorosis in a tooth that has developed inside the jawbone during its formative years. This can affect the tooth's appearance and structural integrity. The fluoride can be ingested through toothpaste, water, or by swallowing too many fluoride supplements. Fluoride tablets may also be given by parents or pediatricians. If your child begins to erupt teeth, you should speak to your dentist about how much fluoride your child needs. If your dentist is aware of the fluoride concentration in the water supply, he or she can provide you with a recommendation. It can also include advice on other beverages like tea and bottled water. The amount of fluoride your child is ingesting until age 10 needs to be measured by you and your dentist.

It Isn't Only In Water

Fluoride levels in formula-fed newborns are 50 to 100 times higher than in solely breast-fed infants. Fluoride can also be consumed by inhaling certain air particles. Fluoride can pass from the mother to the fetus via the placenta. Fluoride is breathed, eaten, and absorbed by the body before entering the bloodstream and depositing in the bones. The present ratio of fluoride consumption to excretion can be determined from previous fluoride exposures. The fluoride balance in the body is extremely complicated and difficult to define.

It's On The Rise in Children

Parents and even dentists are perplexed about how much fluoride is consumed and where it all comes from. The quantity that our children and ourselves might possibly consume must be carefully calculated. We need to know how much fluoride is in our drinking water. We must monitor the usage of toothpaste by youngsters under the age of six. Before cleaning their child's teeth or using toothpaste, parents should speak with a dentist. Only a pea-sized quantity is permitted. Keep the toothpaste out of reach of children. Choose an alternative water source for children aged eight and under whose primary drinking water includes more than 2 ppm fluoride, as this puts them at risk of fluorosis.
