What are the Risk Factors for Oral Health?

Posted on 6/6/2022 by Ranches Family Dental
What are the Risk Factors for Oral Health?Oral disorders, including tooth decay, dental tissue developmental anomalies, and periodontal or dental difficulties, have a complicated and interconnected etiology with common behavioral risk factors. However, most oral health problems are essentially avoidable and treatable in their initial phases.

Common Risk Factors for Oral Diseases

Periodontal disease can be caused by several reasons, all of which can influence its initiation and progression, for example, age. The prevalence of periodontal and dental disorders is higher among the elderly. This is due to the weakening of bones, dementia, and other age-related complications that affect the elderly.
Lifestyle habits like tobacco use and alcohol consumption are common risk factors for oral health. Cigarette smokers are also more likely to get oral diseases such as periodontitis and dental caries. It also is a leading cause of oral cancers and tumor growth. Large consumption of alcohol leads to the erosion of the teeth enamel leading to dental caries and tooth loss. Violence associated with dental behavior also leads to jaw and oral trauma.

Poor oral hygiene is the most common risk factor for oral health deterioration. Brushing and rinsing the mouth with water, especially after consuming sugary foods, helps wash off harmful bacteria. Not brushing and flossing regularly or rinsing with a microbial mouthwash could accumulate bacteria and plaque in the mouth that could result in more serious oral complications.

A diet deficient in essential nutrients can weaken the body's immune system and make it difficult for the body to fight illness. A poor diet can aggravate the state of your gums since oral diseases start as infections. Obesity has also been linked to an increased risk of periodontal illnesses. Lastly, oral contraception, antidepressants, and some cardiac medications can all impact your dental health.
